PROJECT BRIEF

IMPOSED is a project that seeks to help creatives through a self-reflective project to engage with their external and internal influence. Through sketching, book-binding and note taking the creative can begin to see where and how their education, media consumption and other factors influence their work and in turn how that work can become self influential.

The project explores these ideas through the process of crafting a sketchbook by hand, filling out the pages through self direction and prompts, and finally dismantling the work in a process of reflection

MATERIALS

  • 7 sheets of Paper (Letter or A4)
    • 2-3 Sheets of White Paper
    • 2-3 Sheets of Coloured Paper
    • 2-3 Sheets of Tracing Paper (or Vellum)
  • Thread (Linen or other natural fibre)
  • Sewing Needle
  • B/W Printer (w/ Duplex capabilities)
  • Self-healing mat
  • X-acto or Scissors
  • Straight-edge / Ruler
  • Optional: Awl, Beeswax, Bonefolder

 
STEP 1 - PRINTING

A. Download pre-imposed spreads:

B. Load printer with your sheets of paper, alternating the 3 different mediums as you see fit

C. Print file choosing duplex in the settings (double-sided printing). Make sure to choose the short-edge binding option

STEP 2 - BINDING
  • Begin with trimming the printed sheets to remove the bleed from the spreads
  • Layout the sheets of paper in the order of printing, with the first sheet on the bottom with the blank side facing down. The top sheet should be pages 15 and 16
  • Once the sheets are in order follow this youtube tutorial to bind the sheets together with thread and sewing needle:

     

STEP 3 - ACTION AND INVESTIGATION
  • Each spread within the sketchbook is set for one week of a typical 13 week school semester.
  • Each week fill out the spread with what you would like along with following the prompts and questions on the pages
  • Additional to the prompts within the book, please signup for the email system below to receive additional influences/prompts/questions to add within the sketchbook as well:
STEP 4 - UNBINDING AND REFLECTING
  • Once you have completed the sketchbook and finished your semester, we can reflect on the work and influence contained.
  • Start buy removing the binding of the sketchbook, cutting the thread holding the spreads together.
  • With these lose spreads take a look at the different compositions on each side, make connections between them
  • Choose 3 of your favourite compositions and display them as artworks, as singular images.
